Christian Baber

Head of Scientific & Pharmaceutical Data, Informatics & Systems The Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson

Christian Baber, is a chemist by training and holds undergraduate and PhD degrees in computational chemistry with a focus on AI techniques to assess the synthetic accessibility of de novo design compounds. Christian continued this work with a post-doctoral fellowship on the automated design of targeted combinatorial libraries at the Department of Knowledge Engineering, Osaka University, Japan before moving into industry initially as a computational chemist and cheminformatician. Christian has a wide breadth of experience across companies ranging from startups to Pfizer and diverse therapeutic areas with a focus on informatics and predictive modeling but has also managed lab groups and automation teams including compound management and high-throughput purification. Christian joined Shire in 2015 leading Scientific Computing &amp; Informatics before moving on to lead R&amp;D IT in 2017. Christian remained with Takeda following its acquisition of Shire 2019 and is currently the Global Head of Scientific Informatics, covering technology and decision support across all of the scientific R&amp;D functions from research to non-clinical development and pharmaceutical sciences.

Lili Peng

Associate Director, Scientific Ecosystem Analytics Lead, External Innovation Biogen

Dr. Lili Peng is currently the Associated Director of Analytics in Biogen’s External Innovation unit, where she is applying science, data, informatics, and technology to facilitate data-driven decision-making towards expanding Biogen’s drug portfolio.   She was formerly a strategy and technology consultant, Booz Allen Hamilton, where she executed data science and software implementation projects at the FDA and NIH.  Prior to that, Dr. Peng worked as an informatics scientist at AstraZeneca providing analytics solutions in drug discovery and development. Dr. Peng completed her postdoctoral training in computational chemistry and bioinformatics, respectively, at University of California, San Francisco and Stanford University.  She completed her Ph.D. thesis in theoretical chemistry from the University of California, San Diego.  She graduated Tau Beta Pi from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a bachelor’s in chemical engineering.

Sandra Smieszek

Head of Genetics Vanda Pharmaceuticals

Dr. Smieszek trained at the Institute for Computational Biology and has extensive experience in several aspects of human genetic studies including case control studies from clinical sequencing, whole genome explorative analyses, reverse phenotyping enabling precision medicine and pharmacogenomics. Her research focuses on genetic architecture of numerous human disorders, with a strong emphasis on neuro-genetics of Autism Spectrum Disorder, sleep and circadian clock genetics and infectious disease genetic susceptibility/resilience. She has a particular interest in developing and applying computational genetic methods of analysis to complex clinical and genomic data using whole genome sequencing data.  She is working on integrating clinical deep phenotyping with whole genome sequencing to delineate the determinants of complex rare and common disorders as well and responder status placing genetics at the epicenter with sequencing at the time of the trial. To this end, we are currently working on numerous cutting-edge genome sequencing projects to decode the pathophysiology and biomarkers for better diagnostics and therapeutics.
