Why the Decline in Pharma R&D?

For a few decades now there has been a narrative in the pharmaceutical sector that R&D productivity has been steadily declining: thanks to a lack of low-hanging fruit, blockbuster drugs have been harder and harder to find. AI promises a possible solution for this decline: but is the reduction in productivity a real challenge in the industry? Is AI the only means of solving it? To what extent will AI really boost the finding of drugs in a crowded market?
